Pothia

Back to Top of Page Overview

The thriving little fishing town of Pothia is a typically Greek settlement with its array of both ancient and modern buildings in many striking colours and beautiful architecture. It is the home to around 15,000 inhabitants and therefore one of the largest towns in the Aegean.
The Town of Pothia depends heavily upon day-trippers arriving on privately owned caiques visiting even from Kos Town.
The harbour area of Pothia is a cluster of stalls selling sponges, loofahs and shells while the colourful fishing boats bob up and down in the crystal clear waters, making a wonderful backdrop. .
Pothias sheltered harbour is surrounded on three sides by the most amazing art-deco houses and hotels, splendidly painted in the warm colours of orange, yellow and pink.

Back to Top of Page Beaches

There are actually two main beaches where you can enjoy a day at the sea : 'Therma' and 'Kafasia'.
Therma is a shingle beach with warm waters and a traditional Tavern where you can enjoy a meal by the open sea.
Kafasia is an artificial sandy beach which is quite close to the town but there are no restaurants. Nevertheless, there is a kiosk which provides anything which may be required, from refreshments and snacks to newspapers and magazines.

Sightseeing and visiting numerous churches and museums are not the only activities you can do in Pothia. Strolling through the traditional 'Kandounia' ( narrow streets ) and 'Marasia' of the town, buying sponges and souvenirs, are also enjoyable ways of relaxing and spending your time pleasurably.
You can always have a break at one of the many cafes lining along the square and go shopping at the local market where the Kalymnians sell their goods.
One of the most famous cultural events of the summer is the Festival of Traditional Dances, which is also recommended if you wish to spend an evening outdoors, watching people performing in their folklore costumes and enjoying the music.
Watching a good film at the outdoor cinema is another option for those who want to rest and entertain themselves for just a couple of hours.
During the day, going on tours to the island of Pserimos has proved to be a favourite with tourists.
